Tim Keller on writing a sermon

by Eugene Hor on June 18, 2009

Here’s some insight into how Tim Keller goes about preparing his sermons

1. Start 2 weeks ahead on the passage – 4 hours working out the meaning, looking up commentaries on problematic verses, and then producing an outline from this, with the Bible study notes sent to church muso’s who will be choosing songs for the service

2. 3 days before he spend another 4 hours turning the Bible study notes into a sermon (moving from the abstract – what the does the text say? to the a life related sermon – what does this mean to me?)

3. 1 day before on Saturday he spends another 6 hours making it shorter.

Total time: 14-16 hours preparing a sermon, before preaching it 4-6 times on the Sunday.
